The precinct

Written by Steph Donse with photography by Will Neill

Hotel Hotel is in the NewActon Precinct in Canberra. The precinct is a small group of buildings attached by gardens. We've put together a guide to everything that is here to help show you around. You'll find that if you are only here for a few days it is actually pretty easy to never leave the NewActon bubble. Make sure you cross the bridge to the lake; and the road to the Australian National University for a walk though. There is good bird watching to be done at both.

Our library

If you forgot to pack your book that's okay because we have a library. It's just next to the reception desk and you can order coffee, wine (or cocktails!) from the Monster while you have read.

Our library is open to everyone. It is stocked with titles from Perimeter Books, a Melbourne outfit that deals in small press, art, architecture and design books. The collection is added to every now and then. It’s open all the time and is just around the corner from the reception desk.

Our bike hire

The inner suburbs of Canberra are really best explored by bike. They let you see the trees and the birds and the weird mushrooms that pop up after the rain. The lake is right next door if you need to clear your head; and the National Gallery of Australia isn't at all far by bike if you want to catch the dawn or dusk show at James Turrell's 'Within Without'.

The bikes are free and they come with a lock, helmet, lights and quick safety explanation. They are locally made Goodspeed bikes. They are pretty popular so if you want to take a ride come and visit us at concierge and we’ll arrange it for you.

NewActon bike hire

Our bikes do get booked out sometimes so it's very handy that there is also a NewActon bike hire station. It's just across the road from the Palace Electric Cinema, out the front of the A.Baker gardens.

NewActon also has bike hire. You can use their bikes for one ($11), four ($22) or 24 ($33) hours. They come with a helmet, lock and lights.

We sometimes put some really good shows on at the Nishi Gallery (if we do say so ourselves). Check the calendar to see what's on and for opening nights (there is always wine and always nice people).

The Nishi Gallery is a space dedicated to the presentation of exhibitions that explore curiosities on local identity, objects and their meaning, the natural world, design experimentation and artisanal making.

Black Market

This is a good place for an after work drink. You can sit alone at the bar and make nice with the bar staff. They are sweet are up for a chat about things like how you get the taste of a duck into a bottle of gin. It's a little hard to find but worth the hunt.

This is one of our favourites. It's good for work lunches and any kind of dinners.

A.Baker serves European bistro style food that you can easily share, or not. The menu changes seasonally and ingredients are sourced locally. You can also buy bread, sandwiches, pastries and wine to go. This is definitely one of our favourites.

Močan and Green Grout

One of our all time favourite places in the precinct but also in Canberra. Močan for eva. We love it best at night for dinner.

From their open kitchen they serve up shared plates made from locally sourced produce. It’s at once a café and restaurant and wears both hats thoughtfully and with grace. Good to note is that Močan and Greengrout is BYO (you can pick something up on your way at A.Baker or TwentyOne café and groceries).

Bicicletta

This is an especially good restaurant to know about for the long termers in the apartments because it's a good place to get a pizza to go. We recommend taking it over to the lake with a beer on a Sunday arvo. You can dine in too.
