'New York, New York'

New York, New York

Film

It’s Scorsese Season by David Stratton at NFSA.
‘New York, New York’ (1977, PG).

Liza Minnelli’s singer and Robert De Niro’s saxophonist meet on VJ Day, and together they make amazing music. Yet her talents go lauded while his music, ahead of its time, sits him in the background. Like Bob Fosse’s ‘All That Jazz’ (1979), this is a scorching take on the caustic side of show business.

‘Stylistically, this was enough to confuse audiences back in ’77, but today, having paved the way for self-reflexive melodramas by Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant and Lars Von Trier, Scorsese’s experiment with irony simply seems bold and sophisticated’ – Empire.
