Melbourne photographer Ian Tippett’s series I Want You Back falls into the tradition of street photography, where disjointed views are used to express parts of a fragmented world in which photographs are everywhere and images shift between media. Tippett’s photographs turn the street into a private space that shifts between intimacy and distance. This is not a uniform sea of pedestrians, but more an expression of individuality. Random young people are isolated by a high camera that faces down like a self portrait. The series then becomes an examination that takes this intimacy into the collective realm of images.
