The Hidden Mother comprises 1002 photographs ranging from daguerreotypes and tintypes to cartes de visite and cabinet cards from Linda Fregni Nagler’s vast archive of found photographs. The photographs are all examples of how parents would cloak or hide in the background of their child’s portrait in order to hold them still, which was a common occurrence from the time photography was invented until the 1920s. In some instances, the mother’s face has been scratched out or her back turned towards the camera in a futile effort to conceal their presence. The results shift between spectral and humorous. Published by Mack (London).
