Mabo: Life of an Island Man

Film, Talk

Screening and Q&A with Trevor Graham, director of ‘Mabo: Life of an Island Man’, 1993;  alongside artist (and daughter of Eddie Mabo) Gail Mabo.

Born on Murray Island in the Torres Strait, Eddie Koiki Mabo and his fellow islanders changed the Australian political and legal landscape when the High Court granted them ‘native title’ to three islands in the Strait, six months after Mabo’s death in 1992. Trevor Graham’s camera had already followed Mabo in his 1989 documentary ‘Land Bilong Islanders’, but he was moved to tell more of Eddie’s story following his death.
